Faith In America

Faith In America:

It is difficult to imagine that less than 30 years ago in over 15 states one of today’s leading conservative Supreme Court Justices, Clarence Thomas, a black man, could have been charged with a felony for marrying his current wife, a white woman.

For the vast majority of Americans, this kind of discrimination, often justified with misguided religious teachings, would be unthinkable today.

Faith In America asks a simple question:

Is using religious teachings to deny equal rights to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people any less wrong than using religious teaching to discriminate against people of color, against equality for women or against people of different cultures wanting to marry?

Popular Elections, the Roundabout Way

Picture it: On election day in some future year, a presidential candidate ends up with the most popular votes but not enough electoral votes to win.

It’s a repeat of the 2000 election in which one contender, Democrat Al Gore, took the majority of the national popular vote, while the other, Republican George W. Bush, clinched the most electoral college votes and, hence, the presidency.

But this time there’s a twist: A bunch of states team up and give all their electoral college votes to the nationwide popular-vote winner, regardless of who won the most votes in their state. Then, the candidate who garners the most citizen votes in the country moves into the White House.

The Hitler vs. Coulter Quiz

Try this quiz, where you’ll be given quotes about how awful liberals are, and then asked for each quote: who said it, Coulter or Hitler?

I don’t care what Godwin says. This thing is awesome.

Birds Do It, Bees Do It

For something that’s “unnatural”, it sure seems to crop up a lot in nature:

Joan Roughgarden thinks Charles Darwin made a terrible mistake. Not about natural selection—she’s no bible-toting creationist—but about his other great theory of evolution: sexual selection. According to Roughgarden, sexual selection can’t explain the homosexuality that’s been documented in over 450 different vertebrate species. This means that same-sex sexuality—long disparaged as a quirk of human culture—is a normal, and probably necessary, fact of life. By neglecting all those gay animals, she says, Darwin misunderstood the basic nature of heterosexuality.

Bear? That’s a Bunch of Bull

So one of the Democratic primary candidates in CT is accusing the other of “agreeing with the Republicans 80% of the time”.

Absurdly, it’s Lieberman making the accusation.

Nice try, Joe. We ain’t buyin’ it.

The Blue MuFu

Via CNN:

Democrats who love to play the stock market now have a chance to really toe the party line.

Blue Investment Management said it plans offer its Blue Fund, which invests only in companies that give the majority of their political contributions to Democratic candidates and adhere to progressive values, the company announced in a SEC filing earlier this week.

…Companies included in the mutual fund will also have to “act blue,” according to Blue Investment Management, meaning they would have to employ business practices that respect human rights, work towards environmental sustainability and avoid dealing with such harmful products as tobacco and firearms.
